About this Content OER
The summer school will be divided in three parts: a preparatory phase (preparatory meeting on June 7th + individual and group work tasks), a 5-day-block-event from September 23th to the 27th (content part divided in 6 blocks + podcast group work phases), follow-up phase (production of group podcasts + meeting on October 18th to present and discuss the podcasts + optional: term paper).
The preparatory meeting on June 7th will give students the opportunity to get to know the participants and topics of the RUBSchool as well as the requirements to successfully complete the block seminar. To this end, the schedule, procedure and organizational matters - e.g. the requirements and expectations for obtaining credit points - of the summer school will be presented and discussed. Secondly, students will gain an initial insight into the phenomenon of transnational migrant remittances and learn why an interdisciplinary approach is important for understanding the topic. There will also be a short lecture on the creation of podcasts, as it will be the students' task to record their own podcast in the course of this seminar.
Goals
Knowledge wise, students will learn about different perspectives on remittances (sociological, geographical, developmental, economic) and understand their respective contribution to understanding this phenomenon. They will critically examine the dynamics and impact of remittances between supporting families and communities, local development and the (re)production of social inequalities.
Methodologically, the participants will learn about podcasts as a new format for presenting academic content. They will acquire conceptual, technical, and legal knowledge for the planning, production, and publication of a podcast. During that, the student will deepen forms of collaborative work and strengthen their language skills.
