Teaching and learning materials. Open. Free.

What is OpenRUB?

OpenRUB is the platform for freely accessible and open teaching and learning materials for all departments at Ruhr University Bochum. The published teaching/learning materials were developed as part of regular courses and are presented in various formats:

Moodle courses: information, self-study and OpenCourseWare (OCW) courses & preparatory courses

  • Course concepts: also presented in Moodle or on external websites
  • Individual materials: including slides, exercise sheets, old exams, scripts, images, videos or data (open data).
  • Videos from courses: YouTube channels, lecture recordings, educational videos
  • Websites: Teaching/learning and information materials

The learning objectives are listed in the descriptions of the individual learning resources. Some materials are licensed under Creative Commons and can therefore be reused and adapted. These materials are displayed separately. The licences are listed with the learning resource.

What is OER?

The abbreviation OER stands for Open Educational Resources.

OER are open teaching and learning materials that are made available online, free of charge and legally to everyone. As the author, you can publish OER online with no or only minor restrictions and thus decide for yourself which rights of use you grant and which rights you reserve. This provision of OER is made possible by free licences, usually Creative Commons (CC) licences. The various CC licences grant users legal and free use. With CC-licensed materials, the authors do not lose their copyright, but instead use the licence to directly inform users what may be done with the materials and under what conditions. The original authors are always named.

Goals of OpenRUB?

OER as part of Open Science

Openness is a fundamental prerequisite for the comparability and quality assurance of scientific work. Every day, a wide range of digital media and content is used in teaching, studying and research at universities. To make this as easy and safe as possible, it makes sense to use and create open content.

OER are also part of RUB's Open Science Policy. This means that RUB supports university members in the use, production and provision of OER through the advisory and training services offered by the Centre for Science Didactics (ZfW). In the context of the Open Science Policy, a working group on open science has been formed that meets regularly: Open Science at RUB.
