Hinduism is widely recognized as the main religion in contemporary India. However "Hinduism" is more accurately characterized as a collective term encompassing a diverse array of religious teachings and practices. This course offers a comprehensive introductory exploration into the historical evolution of Hinduism, shedding light on the multifaceted religious currents

This course is designed as self-study and is based on the handbook by Angelika Malinar "Hinduismus. Studium Religionen" and related primary sources. The structure of the course follows that of the handbook. The primary sources correspond to the successive topics discussed in the handbook. The quiz questions refer to the handbook and the primary sources.

Goals

The objectives of this self-study course are

  • to gain an overview of the development of Hindu traditions
  • to acquire a basic knowledge of Hindu beliefs, teachings and practices
