Self-study course: Doing health in a digitalized world (OCW)

About this Content OER

This self-study course was designed for anyone interested in the topic of (digital) health literacy. It is the result of a past seminar at the Ruhr University Bochum.

The seminar dealt with the question of how health is realised in a digitalised world. A praxeological perspective was taken to find out how health is practised in a digitalised world. The smartphone played an important role in this: in addition to a variety of health-related tools, such as pedometers, fitness tracking or meditation apps, the smartphone can also be used to find out about symptoms, search for a doctor and make an appointment. The seminar focused on the (non-)use of digital health technologies by students. What is (not) used when by whom, to what extent, with what goals and why?

The self-study course provides theoretical and methodological basics. The concept of (digital) health literacy is introduced and discussed critically from different perspectives. In addition to "classic" approaches, new approaches are also taught.

This project is one of the winning projects of the 28th round of the 5x5000 contest.
